The Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) is an American public broadcaster and the most prominent nonprofit provider of educational television programming to public television stations in the United States. PBS has more than 350 member television stations, many owned by educational institutions, nonprofit groups both independent or affiliated with one particular local public school district or collegiate educational institution, or entities owned by or related to state government.

Unlike major commercial broadcast television networks in the United States, PBS is technically not a network, but rather a program distributor that provides television content and related services to its member stations. Each station is charged with the responsibility of programming local content such as news, interviews, cultural, and public affairs programs for their individual market or state that supplements content provided by PBS and other public television distributors.

The evening and primetime schedule on PBS features a diverse array of programming including fine arts (Great Performances); drama (MasterpieceDownton AbbeyAmerican Family: Journey of Dreams); science (NovaNature); history (American ExperienceAmerican MastersHistory DetectivesAntiques Roadshow); music (Austin City LimitsSoundstage); public affairs (FrontlinePBS NewsHourWashington Week, Nightly Business Report); independent films and documentaries (P.O.V.Independent Lens); home improvement (This Old House); and interviews (Amanpour & CompanyTavis SmileyThe Dick Cavett Show). PBS also broadcasts children's programming as part of the service's (and including content supplied by other distributors not programmed by the service, its member stations') morning and afternoon schedule.

Much as entertaining and educational the service is, it has one serious disadvantage – it’s available in the US only so anyone trying to access PBS outside America (be it a holiday or business trip abroad), your IP will be detected as not coming from within the US and the stream will be blocked.
