ARD is a joint organization of Germany's regional public-service broadcasters and is the largest public broadcaster network in the world. ARD maintains and operates a national television network, called Das Erste ("The First") to differentiate it from ZDF, a.k.a. Das Zweite ("The Second"), which started 1963, as a separate public TV-broadcaster.

ARD's programming is produced by its regional members which operate 54 regional and local radio stations and seven regional TV networks.

Apart from regional members, ARD has two additional channels as part of their ARD Digital package:

  • Tagesschau24 – television news channel
  • One – entertainment television channel

ARD is also involved in several joint venture channels:

  • 3sat with ZDF, ORF and SRG: a cultural channel
  • KI.KA with ZDF: a children's channel
  • Arte with ZDF and France Télévisions: a Franco-German cultural channel
  • Phoenix with ZDF: a news and documentary channel, focused on showing press conferences and political debates in the German parliament live, in addition to historical and political features.

As a Germany-based streamer, due to geographical restrictions, ARD is only available in Germany. If you are traveling or living in any other part of the world, your access to ARD will be blocked.

How to watch ARD outside Germany

As you may expect, if you want to access ARD from anywhere outside Germany, you will see the message that the content is not available in your location. If you travel abroad (either on business or holiday) or you happen to be living in a different part of the world, ARD will not work for you.

What you need is a way of circumventing geo-restrictions which are forced by the streaming services. The streamers detect your IP as coming from outside Germany effectively blocking your stream. Getflix Smart DNS redirects the part of your traffic responsible for showing your location via our dedicated server to make your IP look like it’s coming from the eligible location. The IP itself is not changed so you can browse your local websites and access your local services as well.

The solution does not affect your connection speed and you can gain access to many geo-restricted services available with Getflix. All you need to do is sign up with us (you have a 14-day free trial to test our service), configure your device or your router and start watching. As simple as that.

If you come across any troubles, refer to our support section covering numerous possible problems and their solutions or simply ask us for help by email. Our engineers and support agents are here for you to assist you with any possible issues.

Unblock ARD with Getflix Smart VPN

Smart VPN is another solution that can be used to go around geo-blocking. It differs from Smart DNS in that it offers not only direct access to a dedicated Germany-based server but also encrypts your traffic hiding your IP and making your data completely invisible for anyone outside. Your curious ISP or a potential hacker will not be able to steal your sensitive data and all your online activity will be anonymous.

Become our regular subscriber and use our Smart VPN to use the net on the go. Even if you want to access your banking app or send your confidential messages or work files over an unprotected, open Wi-Fi spot in the hotel or airport, you can be sure that your connection will be private and inaccessible for anyone else.

Use Smart DNS or Smart VPN to gain access to ARD from outside Germany and enjoy online streaming which is both free of geographical boundaries and properly protected from any outside attacks.
